Warwick Archdeaconry Report - 2012
Twenty twelve was by no means a normal year for the District with both the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympic Games taking place.
We tried out several new ideas with the aim of encouraging more members to attend events. It was excellent to see some new faces at meetings, but the tried and tested format of service and tea still proved most popular.
January - The year started with a Guild Quarterly at Whitnash. 45 members signed the attendance book. The meeting was the first to try a slightly different format. The Rev Richard Suffern opened the business meeting with prayers rather than a service and the tea was provided on a ‘bring and share’ basis.
February - The District practice held at All Saints Leamington Spa was a great success. The ringing was run by the Guild Ringing Master, Benedict Kimpton. The ringing was varied and there were a considerable number of members attending who had not previously been to meetings. Some passing ringers had come into Leamington to do some shopping and called in to ring for a while.
March - The District Annual General Meeting was held at Cherington in conjunction with the 6 bell striking competition. This combination produced the best attended A.G.M. for a number of years.
There was additional ringing at Gt. Wolford which proved very popular as it gave those ringers not taking part in the competition the opportunity to ring before the meeting.
May - 15 members took part in the District Annual Spring outing where we were able to welcome David Peacock, the new Warwick District Ringing Master.
June - Quarter peal week to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. 15 towers rang Quarters and each tower received a certificate to commemorate the event.
July and September - We tried two evening meetings this year, Whichford in July and Halford in September. These were not the best attended events of the year with a small number of District members attending at each. August - Annual District Picnic outing in Leicestershire. There were a nice number attending the outing although the weather could have been better. The rain started just as we arrived at the picnic site by the canal.
October - The October Quarterly and 8 bell striking competition was re-scheduled and held later in the month in the Coventry District. This was due to the dedication of the new bells at Brinklow by the Bishop of Coventry.
November - The morning meeting at Lighthorne was well attended. Many of those attending thought the morning practice was a good idea, and should be tried again next year.
December - The year ended with a well-attended joint Warwick and Coventry District Carol service which was held at Napton on the Hill. This was the traditional service of carols and readings, with a fine interlude given by the Ringers Choir led by Richard Taulbut. A special thanks to Margaret Ingman and the Napton Ringers for making us all so welcome.
There have been 30 new members elected to the District over the year.
We said goodbye to Roger Duclaud-Williams who died in June this year. A remarkable man, who led a very full and varied life despite his blindness. He was regular ringer at Whitnash and known by many throughout the District. Roger will be sadly missed.
